I just finished Fahrenheit 451 and I surprisingly loved it! At first some of the futuristic ideas had me very confused but after a while I just got used to them and realized that it was all part of the story. I feel like one of the main reasons that I really liked this book is that it is party coming true. No we don't have firemen coming to burn our houses down because we are reading books, but books are becoming more and more obsolete. First off because less and less people are interested in the act of reading and secondly because the Ipads, e-readers and other electronic devices that allow for books to be read without physically holding one. My favorite character was Clarisse because she represents those that still take the time to read and look deeper into texts and life rather than just reading at the surface.
I could see myself using this book in the classroom in the future. Students could see how reading a book has become a less practiced act than when I was little. When I was young everyone I knew enjoyed reading, I enjoyed it even more than most. I would take time to read a book and enjoy it rather than attempting to skim it and let it all sink in. I still do this today and I feel that others are so rushed in their everyday lives that they don't take the time to sit down and just read anymore.
Ashley, I remember really liking that book too. I was intrigued by the setting, but like you, found it hard to work my way through. It's one of the things I've come to like about the science fiction/fantasy genre--I often get that disoriented feeling. Then, when I'm reading, at some point the pieces fall into place, and it makes sense. I like seeing how you've made some important connections in this book--connections to characters and connections to our present world. Notice that you're talking about using it even though you came to like it so much because you selected it. Would you have liked it if it had been assigned?
ReplyDeleteNow that I think about it, maybe I shouldn't assign it. Part of the reason why I did enjoy it so much was because I picked it out. Maybe I could put it on a list of suggested reading or something of the sort. That way I can show my students that I enjoyed the book on my own, enough to refer it to them just like one of my friends, Ellie, suggested it to me.
ReplyDeleteI also realized that I kind of did like the disoriented feeling, especially when the pieces fell in the place finally. It leaves a lot to my imagination throughout most of the book. I love books that I have to work at and think about sometimes, but other times its nice to just have a nice quick and easy read.
Dude, why read when you could watch the movie? Movies save me so much time so that I could go back to work.
ReplyDeleteI recommend reading The Trial by Kafka. Better yet, why not listen to the audio book, or watch the movie. Not only is The Trial considered a prophecy for the Holocaus, but it is considered (well at least I consider it) a testament on what we have become by unquestionably following our jobs. The main character of 451 followed the rules of his job without question. That is, he did until he met Clarisse.
I loved 451 (of course I watched the fast paced, action packed movie).
I gotta go watch Kung Fu Legends Explosions on my 72 inch 3D television, ciao.
There's a movie to the book?!! I honestly had no idea until you told me. This may be something I will be watching over break
ReplyDeletehaha i didn't watch the movie
ReplyDeletei was just trying to act like one of the non reading people of our time
I figured you were kidding. i didn't expect an aspiring english teacher to be that excited about reading a book over a movie. though it has been tempting for me, like with war and peace, i have successfully never watched a movie instead of reading a book. i find that it ruins my own interpretation because i can't ever get the characters that were depicted in the movie out of my mind and id drives me insane!
